11.1 Radio Script Analysis

Radio Script: Bang Up

This is a Radio Script I am analysing in comparison to a Film Scripts. I have annotated the script to show how the script is formatted and the key elements is has.

STYLE
The style of the script is heavily based on Dialogue. This is due to the dialogue being the most important part of a Radio Script as the speakers won't mention what room they are entering and what it looks like as it would take away the realistic aspect to their performance. It is up to the listener to use their imagination on what they believe the people and interior/exterior looks like.
Dialogue and Sounds are key elements to a Radio Script.

CONTENT
From the dialogue given we can tell what kind of setting we are in based on the accents given to the characters. Patrick speaks with a very London/Slang tone e.g. 'Ave' and 'Em'. We can also tell with the sound directions of the Guard who speaks on a Loudspeaker that they are in a prison like setting. We can assume from this that the story takes place in a prison and the drama will be focused around that atmosphere.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The narrative of the story follows how a family is coping, how the prisoners are coping and how the character Emma is trying to help both the prisoners and her family throughout it all.

GENRE
The genre appears to be comedy-drama, having comedic writing between the prisoners but having the character Emma bring the drama.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for 'Bang Up' seems to appeal to an young adult/adult audience by using slang words such as 'av' and 'em' which an older generation wouldn't relate to as much. The audience could also appeal more to a crowd who speaks slang often (e.g. Parts of London) as they would relate to this type of language more.
However the gender could go both way as the cast overall seems more male but the character Emma seems to be a central character if not main character whom would bring in the female audience.
