11.1 Film Script Analysis

Little Miss Sunshine

This is my analysis of a Film Script and how it is presented as a film script.

`
STYLE
The style we get from the script is that it has heavy description for the viewers to get a good understanding of what exactly is going on and the pace of the events taking place. The first dialogue we receive is from RICHARD who gives us subtle information on his character within the first sentence; Winners and Losers. This sets up his story arc from the beginning on how he won't accept people who give up or don't try.

CONTENT
The content we receive is a montage of people of all different ages, most likely presenting a family to the viewers and allowing us to assume the story will evolve around them. From the opening scene we can assume Olive will be a key character and that its her passions and interest in beauty pageants that will drive the film.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The structure of the script shows a family unit, all given a fair amount of time each to establish each character and their importance to the plot. E.G. Olive being interested in pageants but is 'plump'. This already shows a dilemma for the story as beauty pageants rely heavily on slim young girls and this presents how the structure of the script will develop for later on; Olive will feel misplaced but most likely overcome how she feels.

GENRE
The genre the script presents is a Drama/Comedy. The drama being presented in Olive a 'plump' young girl watching slim beauty queens and re-acting how they present themselves. This shows conflict/drama for later as Olive will most likely feel self conscious and exposed to other little girls. The comedy comes from the writing in the opening of the script. 'A name is announced. Four hearts break'. There wasn't a true need to mention the other girls heart's breaking as its obvious they would be sad, however the blunt writing of these four hearts breaking brings in a dark humour as four hearts breaking should be quite sad but its mentioned as if it is as irrelevant as it is needed to be mentioned.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for Little Miss Sunshine would be aimed at adults as there are certain heavy themes a younger audience wouldn't be allowed to view. Especially since there's dark humour involved and swearing later in the story (and the intake of drug use). This film is targeted for adults that will understand the dark/dirty comedy themes and appreciate them.
